Teachers Perform for Students Recital:
Please post the enclosed flyer in your studio, and perhaps photocopy some to
hand out to your students. Thank you to all teachers who will be participating
in the recital. It should be a wonderful event, so please invite your family,
friends, and of course your students and their families and friends.
If you are not one of the performers but would like to help out at the event, we
still need people to take donations, hand out programs, and give the welcome
speech at the beginning of the recital. Please let me know if you would be
interested in helping out in one of these areas. Hope to see all of you there!
Colleen Bell, Recital Chairman
New Location for Events: We will be having our five big events
(both festivals, both theory tests, and the piano contest) at the Cypress Creek
Christian Community Center (CCCCC) this year. The Northwoods Presbyterian Church
has a new pastor and could not guarantee us the dates we needed, so President
Becky May and Student Affiliate Chairman Colleen Bell lined up the excellent
facilities at the Center, and we think everyone will be pleased with the
arrangements.
Message From the President: Welcome to a new school year! I hope
that you have many exciting and fun activities planned for your students this
year. If not, check into our Student Affiliate program. The first event of the
year will be the state theory exam, so if you do not have your kids into a
theory workbook of some kind, now is the time. After that, we will be having our
Holiday Festival in November, so you could begin preparing them to perform in
that event.
Attendance Excuses: All members are reminded of the 4-meeting minimum attendance
rule. Members with legitimate excuses, as spelled out in Standing Rule #1 in the
Yearbook, should contact Attendance Chairman Crystal Beltran, 281/257-0313, or
cbmusicstu@aol.com .
Ensemble Chairman Needed: CCMTA won’t have any ensembles to send
to the 2004 Convention in San Antonio again this year if no one is willing to be
the chairman. It’s not Fathers’ Day weekend this time! If you are interested,
please contact Student Affiliate Chairman Colleen Bell at 281/890-9470, or
cvbell99@hotmail.com
Harris Compositions Well Received at TMTA
Convention: Two ensemble compositions of Don Harris were performed
on fifteen grand pianos at the TMTA Convention in Arlington this past June by
combined groups made up of CMTA and CCMTA students. Both compositions were
very enthusiastically received by the general audience as well as key music
educators from around the state. The performed compositions were Flying
High (with 20 junior high students) and An American Salute (with 33
high school students) Both compositions included three brief piano solo
parts. In addition, An American Salute included 4 vocalists, a
narrator, percussion and a brief audience sing-a-long at the end. The high
school group was the largest high school group to perform at the convention, and
they were selected to give an honors performance of The Star Spangled Banner
with audience participation at the beginning of the program.
Flying High was conducted by Natalie Syring,
and An American Salute as well as The Star Spangled Banner, was
conducted by Don Harris. The following CCMTA student affiliates assisted
in the performances: Alisha Bloodworth, Alex Caire, Robert Conrad, James Hyatt,
Demetria McBride, Allie Miller, Megan Miller, Bill Misek, Michael Rooney,
Rishabh Sinha, Jennifer Tran, Stephanie Tran and Alex Weckievicz. A
wonderful and exciting time was had by all participants.
Fall Opening for Students: Two
of our teachers have changed their schedules and now have some openings for this
fall: Sharon Anthony in the Cutten Green subdivision - 281/580-7848 or
281/895-0944. She teaches piano, voice, music education, theory and music
history. Vicki McDonald in Cypress teaches piano and French horn.
She can be reached at 281/807-3385 or cell phone 713/927-8214.
Attendance Excuses: All members
are reminded of the 4-meeting minimum attendance rule. Members with
legitimate excuses, as spelled out in Standing Rule #1 in the Yearbook, should
contact Attendance Chairman Cyrstal Beltran, 281/257-0313, or
cbmusicstu@aol.com.
Community Service: Community
Services Chairman Colleen Bell (yes, she wears many hats) announces that this
year's first community service activity will be canned food drive at the Fall
Theory Test. Please encourage your students to bring at least one canned
food item to the test. All donations will go to NAM (Northwest Assistance
Ministries).
Furthermore... We're
happy to welcome back three former members who rejoined this year - Bonnie
Jacobi, Pat Mercer, and Sharon Peng.... More news about Don Harris.
He was presented a beautiful "Composer of the Year" plaque by CMTA and received
a standing ovation by enthusiastic audience at their Honors Concert, held by
Montgomery College Auditorium in early June. Congratulations, Don!
