TIME: Special Notice: 9:30 AM - Program Board Meeting will follow at 10:15 AM, General Meeting at 11:00 AM
Guest: JOHN HENDRICKSON
Program: RECITAL, DISCUSSION
John Hendrickson graduated from Rice, Shepherd School of Music, and is
Artist in Residence at Houston Baptist University. He has performed solo and as
accompanist at Carnegie Hall. He's a member of Tres Voce, a trio of piano,
violin and cello, which performed at Carnegie Hall this spring. In addition,
they host a chamber music workshop at HBU every summer for students.
I was pleased to be asked to be one of the students this past summer. What a
wonderful experience for young performers, and older ones too. He will be
performing a program on piano of mixed repertoire, approximately 45 minutes
long.

Fall Theory Test: This year's theory testing will be held at a new
location the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center located at 6823
Cypresswood Dr. (There is a map on the last page of the Yearbook, just before
the back cover.) Please have your students follow the "arrow" signs to the
Annex, which is the building at the very back of the church facilities. Testing
times are in the Yearbook. Make up tests will be the following day at 1:00 at
the same location. All teachers who have students taking the test are required
to help on the testing day. If you cannot make it that day, please contact me to
arrange an alternative.
Brad Love, Theory Chairman
Canned Food Drive: Saturday. October 25, 2003, is Make a
Difference Day. This is a day that individuals and organizations all over the
country are urged to participate in a community service project. We will be
having a food drive at the theory test, so please encourage your students to
bring at least one canned food item to the test. All donations will be collected
and given to Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM).
Colleen Bell, Community Service Chairman
From the President: Hello everybody, and welcome to fall. You
know, everybody else calls this "football season," but I call it "theory
season." Hope you are all making headway on preparing for the test. Also,
another up and coming event is our Holiday Festival next month. Time to get out
the Christmas music and start organizing and assigning. Perhaps you, like me,
have Performance Classes coming up in two weeks, so they come first. No rest for
the weary...
We were very proud and excited about the results of our Teachers Perform for
Students Recital. It was a huge success! We had over 65 audience members
present, and had donations of $525! That was amazing for all of us. Now we are
planning to do it again next year. If you would like to participate, get out
your favorite piece and start brushing it off and practicing for September,
2004!
As the holiday season approaches, thoughts turn to family. I know firsthand how
difficult it is to balance a busy music teaching profession with family duties.
Sometimes important family events are missed due to job responsibilities, but
remember that someday those little kids will be gone to pursue their own
careers, and you won't be able to cook their dinners, wipe their noses, or help
with the homework anymore. Give as much time to your families as possible. You
won't ever be sorry
Ensemble Music Chosen: The state has approved our selections as
follows: For the elementary group, "Knock on Wood" by Melody Bober, found in
Dynamic Duets Book 2. The junior high music is "Joy of Spring" by Beatrice
A. Miller, available in sheet music. The Music Rack has ordered quantities of
both for us and should have them there soon you may want to check by phone for
make sure.
Dorothy Kirkpatrick, Ensemble Chairman
Teachers Perform for Students Recital: A big thank you to all who
participated in this year's recital. Thanks to the performers Andrea Cannon,
Dorothy Kirkpatrick, Becky May, Brad Love, Colleen Bell and Holly Foster whose
talent and love of music provided entertainment and inspiration to students,
parents, and patrons of all ages. Also, thanks to Linda Anthony , who handed out
programs and manned the door so that performances would not be interrupted by
late comers. Finally, thank you to all those who came to support the
organization. Through many generous donations, we were able to raise over $500
for scholarships!
Colleen Bell, Recital Chairman
Listing for Accompanist Positions: If you are a pianist who loves
accompanying for students and would like to reach over 60 string teachers and
hundreds of their students and parents in the greater Houston area, you may want
to place a listing in the Houston Area Suzuki Strings Assn. (HASSA) in their
directory and yearbook for $8.00. A listing includes name, day and evening
telephone numbers, e-mail address, geographical location, hourly rate, level of
student and type of accompanying you are comfortable with. Advertising space in
the yearbook is available for $20 to $250. HASSA can be contacted at PO Box
1911, Sugar Land, T x. 77487 or info@hassa.org.
Fund raisers: Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Bake Sale, but
the Teachers Recital was hugely successful, and the yard sign sales are going
very well. I have decided to extend the deadline for the yard signs to
October 21st, our meeting date. We are including all the information in this
newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact me at 281-370-2236, or
rebeccasmay@juno.com
Thank you for your participation and help with ail of our fund raisers. W e
should be able to keep our CCMTA Scholarship at $1000 this year. We will see how
the rest of the year goes. I would like to be able to raise the amounts for the
Camp Scholarships again. Most camps these days are at least $500. We have sold
in excess of 50 yard signs so far. Keep those letters and phone calls comin'!
If you have an idea for a spring fund raiser, and would be willing to head it
up, please let me know. We will not be having the raffle this year.
Becky May, Fundraiser Chairman
Furthermore...
Editor's note: I hope you will all make use of and contribute to our website
at www.ccmta.org. We have a new website
chairman, Pat Wickey, who is a logical choice, as her son first set up the
website, she herself subsidized it for the first three years, and her daughter
Janet is now the webmaster. The
current membership list is already in place, and we eliminated the spouses'
names and subdivision
abbreviations. Look for further updates, pictures, and resources to be listed
soon. The newsletter is posted on
the website usually before you receive it in the mail. And if later you misplace
yours, you can always read it
there.
