Need Students for March Program: If
you have a student who would like to participate in a masterclass, I would like
to know as soon as possible. Our program for the March meeting will be a
lecture/masterclass combination presented by Dr. Leslie Spotz from Tarleton
State University of Stephenville. She would like to have three students: One
high school student with a piece memorized and almost ready for performance, as
well as two middle school students who are somewhat advanced. I am asking for
one student from three different teachers who can be available for 11 o’clock
the morning of Tuesday, March 9.
Her topic will deal with performance preparation—how a student can feel at ease
and have performing or competing be a fun event rather than a stressful one.
Please contact me so that we can be prepared for this excellent program.

Yearbook Addition: A new member was voted in at the October
meeting and was welcomed in person.

From the President: Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Fall! Maybe some of
you will be able to get away to see some fall color farther north. The leaves
are so beautiful this time of year. Soon you’ll need to go to the grocery store,
get your Thanksgiving feast ingredients, and start planning those pies.
But first….Gena Hughey our Festival Chairman, has been hard at work organizing
our Holiday Festival, which is sure to be a success. We have 184 students signed
up! Even if you do not have any students involved, please come and listen on
Saturday, November 15th, and “learn the ropes,’ so that your students can
participate in the April, 2004 Festival.
Things are just “hopping along” with CCMTA. We ended up selling 84 yard
signs—thank you to all those who sold signs! Magnolia Sign Source sells the
signs in lots of 50 or 100, so we purchased 100 and have 16 more on hand. If you
are still interested in a sign, please contact me as soon as possible. The sign
company has said that they will put the names on them like the others.
The shipping cost was prohibitive, so I opted to have them delivered to my
house. I hope to have them about November 7th but will call each teacher when
they arrive, so that you can come and pick them up. We made $326 on the signs,
which along with our $550 for the Teachers Recital, makes $876 to go toward our
scholarships.
See you at the November meeting. It promises to be stellar.
Opportunities for Provisional Members: From time to time we will
call your attention to events which can help those provisional members toward
their goal of becoming active members. One of the ways spelled out on page 3 of
the Constitution and Bylaws in the Yearbook is attendance at masterclasses. The
University of Houston Downtown is sponsoring an International Piano Festival
January 23-25, 2004, with masterclasses on the 24th and 25th. For more
information, tel. 713/743-3167 or e-mail tmf@uh.edu
Furthermore...
We’re so sorry to hear that Wendy Wells’ father is in critical condition
in the hospital. His wife and children have been taking turns maintaining a
constant vigil….Jennifer Trent recommended CCMTA to St. Cuthbert’s Episcopal
Church as a good source for obtaining a pianist. Those interested will find all
the details spelled out in the enclosed….Becky May has a winner! Her student,
Nicholas Dao, a third-grader, won Honorable Mention in the Elementary Division
of the Chopin International Youth Competition at St. Thomas University on
Sunday, October 26th. He performed the Chopin Mazurka in F Major, Op. 68, #3,
the “Minute” Waltz, and the Chopin Prelude, Op. 28, #23. Congratulations to
all!….A piano mover new to Texas has moved his 30-year family business to
Cypress from Maryland. Carlton Ralon was our guest at the October meeting and
hopes we will avail ourselves of his services when the need arises. It’s Dad and
Brad Piano Moving, telephone 281/831-3443.
