NOVEMBER 2004 NEWSLETTER

DATE: November 16, 2004
PLACE: H&H Music, 713 FM 1960 W.
TIME: 9:30 AM—Board Meeting, 10:15 AM—CCMTA Meeting, 11:00 AM—Program
GUEST: Colleen Bell
PROGRAM: group games to learn theory

We all know Colleen Bell as our Second Vice President in charge of Student Affiliate activities. And we also know that she was recently elected to a three-year term as Director in TMTA, because we helped put her there. What some may not know is that she was a TMTA Student Affiliate member herself for 12 years, participating in Performance Competition, World of Music and Theory, and receiving the Whitlock Memorial Scholarship Award.

She studied piano with Dr. Lora Deahl at Texas Tech University, and was graduated from the University of Houston with a double major—a Music Degree in Piano Performance, studying with Nancy Weems, and a Psychology Degree.

Colleen will demonstrate some games to play with students in a group setting to enhance their understanding of theory and motivate them to learn these "boring" theory concepts. She will also let us in on some of her own ideas that she uses in her teaching at the University of Houston, as well as in her own studio for motivational purposes.

New Member-at-Large: Joel Hammett won’t be in that office after all. He has just accepted a full-time position at the University of Houston which will preclude his attending our meetings, so he has submitted his resignation as an officer of CCMTA, but not as a member! He plans to remain active, for which we are glad, and we wish him well in his new job.

As provided for in our Constitution, President Becky May, with the unanimous approval of the Board, chose Andrea Cannon to fill the vacancy.

Former Member Reinstated: Cindy Mackay has retired from her school teaching job and is now back with us. Please add her to your yearbook. She teaches piano and elementary & junior high voice in Cypresswood at 3419 Blue Cypress, Spring 77388. (281) 350-8079 amackay@pdq.net  Welcome back, Cindy!

From the President: Things are hopping right along with the school year. Theory testing and Fall Festival are upon us. Do hope that things are running smoothly for all members of CCMTA. If you ever have any questions about anything, feel free to contact me.

Becky May

Ensemble Update: We have received approval for two ensemble pieces for the TMTA convention in June. They are Canon in D by Pachelbel, arranged for two by Kevin Olson, and Renaissance Rag from Jazz, Rags & Blues Book 3 by Martha Mier. They will be available from the Music Rack, but be sure to check before heading over there. The Canon was chosen for the older students and the rag for the younger ones. The group playing the Canon will be wearing formal wear in honor of our 25th anniversary. Not sure about the rag costume yet—not rags though!

Dorothy Kirkpatrick, Ensemble Chairman

Double-check World of Music Books: Teachers interested in having their students participate in the World of Music tests need to check the books to make sure they have the updates for grades 4-12, including the Meaning of Eras and its questions. Some of the books may have these pages, and some may not. If you need them, please contact me at (281) 444-6670, or go the www.tmta.org website in the download area.

Linda Anthony, World of Music Chairman

Teachers Perform for Students Recital:The recital was a huge success again this year, with about 100 people in attendance. I want to thank all the performers and helpers for a job well done. We raised $685 for scholarships!

Colleen Bell, Recital Chairman

Linda Anthony and Colleen Bell to Host Christmas Party:With the temperatures finally dipping down into the 80’s around here, we can finally sense that holiday season just around the corner. As you fill up your calendar with all kinds of fun and festive activities, make sure you save room for the CCMTA Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 7th, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM at the home of Colleen Bell. More details to come…

Furthermore. . . Dorothy Kirkpatrick and her husband Peter spent a week hiking in Big Bend. The weather was glorious, and the flowers were beautiful—just as the rangers told them they would be. They sure picked the right week to go….Becky May’s husband Roy took her to New York City for her birthday. They crammed a lot into 2-1/2 days: to the Metropolitan Opera to see “Aida,” church at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a very emotional trip to Ground Zero, and a horse and carriage ride through Central Park. She says it was a grand time and a trip she will always remember.
