If so, perhaps the deadline can be extended. Stay tuned for developments. Right From the Composer’s Mouth: Dorothy had a question from one of our teachers regarding the ensemble piece “The Hermit Crab Cha Cha,” and she went right to the composer asking whether the instructions in measure 27 (“R.H. 1 octave higher to end”) meant playing it 1 octave higher both times, or to begin at the repeat. She received the following reply from Kevin Olson of Elmhurst College: “My original intention was that ‘RH 1 octave higher to the end’ would apply just to the repeat of m.27 through to the end, but I didn’t make it very clear in the instructions. Most people perform the 8va both times, and that’s fine with me. How’s that for a wishy-washy answer? Maybe the kids performing it can decide which way they like more--they have the composer’s permission to do that!” From the President: Dear CCMTA Members, Happy New Year to all, and here’s hoping that you have the best year ever! The Spring Theory Test is coming up in about a month, so get those workbooks out, and go after it. The Original Composition Contest Winners will perform in a recital on Sunday, after which their compositions will be off to state. Best wishes to all of our local winners! See you at the January meeting. Becky May Furthermore. . . Don Harris spent his Christmas holidays in Maui, Hawaii. He says it was so beautiful and peaceful. He called it his “first” trip, implying a return.... Dorothy Kirkpatrick and her husband Peter recently spent a week in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. Hope she has details for our vicarious enjoyment.... JoAnne Griffith, among others, heard from three of her ex-students this Christmas and was very excited about what they are doing artistically. One was on the Grand Opera Stage in Milan, Italy this summer, in a very successful appearance. While teaching her piano, JoAnne heard her beautiful voice and told her she ought to study opera—and she did! Another piano student of hers always said his first love was acting, but he put his piano study to good use playing piano for college productions, enabling him to put himself through drama school. He now plays the part of Amy’s clerk on “Judging Amy” on CBS Tuesday nights at 9:00. Still another young man is now head of music production on the children’s educational program “Barney” on Channel 8. He had studied for a while with Jerry Sue Greenhill, who gave him to JoAnne knowing of her work in composition, because that was his main interest. He went on to earn a Masters in Music and also has his own recording studio. JoAnne says, regarding them all, WOW!....I echo that, and we’d love to hear from some others of you who have been teaching for a long time and what you hear from your former students. Let us share in your excitement as JoAnne has done. |
