FEBRUARY 2005 NEWSLETTERDATE: February 15, 2005 PLACE: H&H Music, 713 FM 1960 W. TIME: 9:30 AM—Board Meeting 10:15 AM—CCMTA Meeting 11:00 AM—Program GUEST: DR. LESLIE SPOTZ PROGRAM: PIANO PERFORMANCE Dr. Spotz was our guest a year ago, when she conducted a masterclass and workshop on performance motivation. We were treated to tantalizing snatches of her own piano playing, as she demonstrated various points. This time we get to hear her perform a full program of Mozart, Crawford, Debussy and Chopin. After her debut at Jones Hall at the age of 12, she continued her studies at the North Carolina School of the Arts with pianist Irwin Freundlich and Evelyn Swarthout of American University. She received a full scholarship to Curtis Institute of Music, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree. She studied with the legendary Mieczyslaw Horszowski, went on get a Masters in Music at Temple University, and completed her doctorate in music at Rutgers University in 2002. She is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. She has performed extensively throughout the U.S., winning numerous honors. We are so fortunate to have her play a program for us! ******************************************************************************** CALENDAR OF EVENTS • Saturday, February 5th – Spring Theory Test – CCCCC • Sunday, February 13th - TMTA Local Performance Contest – H&H Music • Saturday, February 19th-8:00 AM-4:00 PM-Piano Contest–CCCCC. This came about because Conroe had more students who want to be in ensembles than can fit on the stage, and we needed directors, so Doris Lum proposed to join CCMTA and direct our ensembles, and we would accommodate the extra Conroe students—a win/win solution! So now’s the time for all those interested to sign up at this meeting—Doris Lum will be present, and we welcome her back as a member too! Fall Festival: Fall Festival master lists and money are due to Gena Hughey on February 15th. That is her worst week for Solo & Ensemble rehearsal deadlines and she will probably not be at the meeting that day. It would be best if you mail them to her at 3615 Oakhall Drive, Houston, TX 77006, postmarked on or before February 15th. Judging sheets should also be mailed to her, postmarked on or before March 23rd. Current forms are in the new handbook. Please list "Level Attained" as Early Elementary, Elementary, Late Elementary, Early Intermediate, Intermediate, Late Intermediate, Early Advanced or Advanced. And please leave "AM/PM Required" blank unless it would be impossible for a student to participate otherwise. Thanks! From the President: Dear CCMTA Members, We have sold 40 yard signs out of 100. If you can sell more, please do. The deadline has been extended indefinitely. I plan to leave “Yard Sign Sale” packets at The Music Rack this week for those of you unable to attend the meeting. Thanks a million to those who have sold signs—especially Tracey Parker and Larisa Chernis. If you have any questions, please contact Rebecca May at 281-370-2236. It’s love month again. Do something for somebody you love on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, and hope to see you at the meeting. I am planning a few surprises. Becky May, President Nominating Committee: The following were elected at the January meeting, charged with coming up with a slate of officers for the coming year: Linda Anthony, Rebecca May, and Janice VanDerbur. Their selections will be announced at the March General meeting and published in the April newsletter. Voting will take place at the April meeting. Furthermore. . . Rob Erickson and his wife Marilyn just returned from two weeks of surfing and snorkeling on the Hawaiian island of Kawai….Becky May is all excited about becoming a grandmother for the first time. Her daughter Amanda is expecting her first baby in August….Colleen Bell ran the Houston marathon in January and finished in good time. Check out her picture on our website www.ccmta.org in the “Teachers in Action” section. Our intrepid webmaster was able to pull up an enlargement from the official picture she sent me. I forwarded it to him just in case he could do something with it, and he sure did! Congratulations to Colleen for her running of the race, and also to webmaster Luke Spence! |
