May Luncheon: The May Luncheon is Tuesday, May 10th, 10:00 AM at Raoul’s Restaurant, 5121 W. FM 1960. The luncheon cost is $16 per member. CCMTA will provide the lunch for free to invited performers and one parent, as well as CCMTA Honorary Members.

I have arranged to have the Menu/Registration Form placed on our website—www.ccmta.org. Those of you with computers can download copies. Those without e-mail addresses on record will find one enclosed. Please fill one out for each attendee and bring it to the April meeting along with the payments. Or mail to me (my address is on the form). Notify me if you require an extension to May 1st. If you have many students/parents attending, you can provide a spreadsheet of names and menu selections in lieu of many individual forms. Please actually ask your performers/students what they want to eat. Last year teachers just guessed, requiring emergency substitutions to accommodate vegetarians whose teachers had requested a meat dish for them.

Nancy Johnston, Luncheon Chairman

Harris Activity Awards Deadline is April 15!! Much excitement is in the air again this year for all students who expect to soar somewhat above the minimal number of activity points required for entry into CCMTA’s 3rd annual Don H. Harris Activity Awards Competition. Cash awards totaling $500.00, and broken down in the manner described on page 59 of our yearbook, will be presented to the top achievers in this year’s competition.

In addition, all other participants who qualify for entry by meeting at least the minimal number of required points will receive special honorable mention awards for their noteworthy efforts throughout the year. (Starting this year, the minimal number of points necessary for enrollment has increased from last year’s 12 points for all grades to 14 points for grades 1-8, and 17 points for grades 9-12.)

All necessary information related to application requirements and other specifics of the awards are clearly defined in the enclosed document entitled "Application Procedures of Harris Activity Awards", as well as on pages 59-60 in the yearbook. If there are any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact chairman Don Harris by email or phone.

Funding for these very special awards was made possible through an Endowment Fund set up by Pat Wickey, CCMTA’s first President. This very generous fund will provide Activity Awards for CCMTA’s more enthusiastic students for years to come. We are most appreciative and grateful to Pat and her family for enabling us to add such motivating and truly unique awards to our annual student opportunities for musical growth.

Proposed Bylaw Amendments to Be Voted On: The Executive Board proposed several new Bylaw amendments related to membership at their March Meeting, and recommended them to the General Membership for the purpose of being voted on at our April Meeting.

A notice related to the proposed amendments is enclosed in this newsletter. All members are encouraged to read the information in advance of the meeting in order to assist us in keeping the business aspects of our meeting moving along smoothly.

Member of the Year Voting to Take Place: The following two candidates for Member of the Year were nominated at the March meeting. Please read about their activities and prepare to vote for one by secret ballot at the April meeting. Chairman JoAnne Griffith will keep the results secret until the May Luncheon, when she will present the award.

CCMTA Officers to be Elected: The nominating committee, Linda Anthony, Becky May and Janice VanDerbur, propose the following slate of officers for next year:

Treasurer JoAnne Griffith
Parliamentarian Brad Love

Additional nominations (with the previous consent of the nominee) will be in order from the floor at the April meeting. Also, a Member-at-Large is to be nominated from the floor and added to the slate, which is then voted upon. Those elected will be sworn in at the May Luncheon.

District Piano Performance Contest: The District Piano Performance Contest was held on March 12 at Baylor University. CCMTA had one of the largest groups of students advancing to the District competitions, and was very well represented by the five following talented pianists:

Jacqueline Perrin (grades 7-8) – student of Colleen Bell

Victoria Yeh (grades 9-10) – student of Colleen Bell

Vicky Ren (grades 9-10) – student of Sharon Peng

Jaclyn Prapta (grades 9-10) – student of Linda Herring

Patrick Frith (grades 11-12) – student of Don Harris

All five performers did a very commendable job within a very competitive framework, and two of the five received special recognition for their outstanding performances. They were:

Jacqueline Perrin (7-8 Grade Category) and student of Colleen Bell – selected as one of the two unranked performers to advance to the state competition in June.

Patrick Frith (11-12 Grade Category) and student of Don Harris –selected 1st alternate, and is eligible to advance to state if either of the two main winners are unable to attend the state competition for any reason.

Congratulations are definitely in order for all involved students and teachers. CCMTA highly commends them for all their hard work in preparing for this year’s competition.

Seeking Whereabouts of Dee Schroell: The last newsletter sent to her in Montgomery was returned marked "Moved. No forwarding address." Does anyone have news of her? If so, please contact newsletter editor, Doris Erickson.

Important Notice Regarding Proposed Amendments to CCMTA Bylaws
(All members please read carefully, and be prepared to cast your vote at April Meeting.)

The following proposed bylaw amendments related to membership were recommended by the Executive Board at the March Meeting, and will receive final vote by the general membership at our April Meeting.

The Board recommends that we amend our By-laws related to Article V (Membership) in the following manner:

• Change the first four lines of the opening paragraph in Article V. Membership to read as follows:

"Membership shall be unlimited in number and shall consist of five classes: Active, Provisional, Associate, Patron, and Honorary. Election to Active, Provisional, Associate, Patron, and Honorary membership rests with the Executive Board who may accept or reject the recommendations of the Membership Committee."

(Basically, it is being recommended that we change "four classes" to "five classes" to enable us to add "Patron membership" to our existing membership types.)

• Change the existing Section 3 (Associate Membership) to read as follows:

Section 3. Associate Membership may be granted to any qualified part-time teacher interested in being a member of CCMTA who has the equivalent of a minor in music, but is uninterested in applying for provisional or active membership due to the specific requirements that evolve out of these distinctions not being feasible at the present time.

A. An Associate member may maintain this status for an indefinite period of time if so desired.
B. The Executive Council reserves the right to interpret "qualified" in cases where experience must be evaluated in lieu of an actual college transcript indicating enough musical credits to merit a minor in music.
C. Associate members shall be expected to pay annual local, state and national dues, but shall not vote and shall not serve on the Executive Board or Executive Council.
D. Associate members shall not enter students in association events and activities, and are therefore exempt from the CCMTA meeting attendance rule.

(It was recently brought the Board’s attention that we were in need of an additional class of membership to accommodate certain potential members who come our way with a substantial or noteworthy musical background, but merely want to join our Organization for the purpose of staying abreast of all that is happening musically in the area—without being directly involved with the set rules and requirements of Provisional or Active membership. It was determined by the Board that a good possibility would be to broaden the rules and specifics related to our present Associate Membership, and move the existing "non-musician", "non-teacher" type specifics to a new class of membership, called Patron Membership. It is felt that in addition to making our membership classes broader for all who come our way, the changes could also affect our annual revenue and membership total in a positive sense as well.)

The Board recommends that we further amend our By-laws by adding an additional Section after the newly proposed Section 3 of Article V that adds "Patron Membership" to our existing membership types. It is recommended that it be stated in a similar manner as the previous qualifications for Associate Membership and read as follows:

Section 4. Patron Membership may be granted to a person other than a teacher interested in the field of music. He/she may attend General Meetings, but shall not vote and shall not serve on the Executive Board. A Patron member will be expected to pay annual local dues, but not state or national. Patron members are not required to have a musical background, and are exempt from the CCMTA meeting attendance rule.

(All other sections in Article V would have to increase numerically beyond this point.)
