OCTOBER 2005 NEWSLETTER

DATE: October 18, 2005

PLACE: H&H Music, 713 FM 1960 W.

TIME: 9:30 AM—Board Meeting 10:15 AM—CCMTA Meeting 11:00 AM—Program

GUEST: DR. JOHN SHARPLEY

PROGRAM: THE CREATIVE PROCESS: A LECTURE-PERFORMANCE

The first part of the two-part program, a lecture/power-point presentation, examines the meaning of such concepts as creativity, free speculation, creative process, imagination, invention, inspiration and craft. Direct experiences with the composer’s creative process, both personal and from others, can be useful when relayed and investigated. This may serve to construct a working model of the creative process. Forces which trigger and hamper creativity might then be more clearly defined. Creativity in music exists on three levels: first emanating from the composer, then from the performer, and finally, from the audience’s personal experience. Between these three levels there would be points of connection and crossover. Listening is itself a creative act.

The second part is performance of original piano works by John Sharpley, who is a native of Houston, son of teacher Geraldine Sharpley. Since 1986 he has lived in and worked from Singapore, where he was appointed composer-in-residence for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra As a solo pianist, he regularly tours the world over; as a composer, he has been honored for several of his film scores and has had his orchestral works performed by major symphony orchestras here and abroad.

Fall Theory Test: Community Service Chairman Colleen Bell announced that a food drive will be held at the test site on October 29-30 to benefit Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM). Please have your students bring non-perishable food items to the test and place them in the boxes at the registration table.

Composition Workshop: Have you ever wanted to teach your students composition but didn’t know how to get started? I’m sure that many of us have had students come to us with music that they have created on their own, but it’s not quite substantial enough to be considered a “composition.” Learn how to help students create their own compositions at a workshop I plan to give at my studio on Tuesday, October 25th, at 10:00 AM For more information, contact me at 281-444-6670.

Linda Anthony

Fall Festival: The deadline for having the Fall Festival Critique Sheets to me is Tuesday, October 18th. You can turn them in at the meeting or mail them to me. I am planning to have your students’ schedules ready for you at the meeting. If you are not able to attend, I will email or mail your schedules to you. Thank you for your participation!

Yearbook Correction: On page 5, where the 2004-2005 Student Winners are listed, there are mistakes in the Instrumental Solo listings at the bottom of the page. Andrea Cannon’s student Timothy Parks won First Place in the 9-10th grade category, and her student Jordan Camerino won Honorable Mention in his category—7-8th grade. Congratulations to both! Their picture, along with Andrea, is on our website, www.ccmta.org,, in the Contest Winners section (with permission).

Keep Checking Our Website: Our website curator, Luke Spence, noticed that we had an event (the Original Composition Recital) scheduled for the day Rita was due to strike and offered to post the cancellation on the Home Page—an excellent idea, as it gave those scheduled to play a place to check in case they couldn’t reach the chairman. We subsequently posted the information about the rescheduling. We’ll do that in the future—post last minute information there. We also have the yearbook information on the website, most of it in advance of the printing. AND, check out the “Teachers in Action” section! There’s a picture there of some of the cutest little kids you ever saw, being taught guitar by Andrea Cannon during her summer travels on behalf of Suzuki. President Dorothy Kirkpatrick will soon add pictures of her Alaskan adventure this summer.

From the President: Students of Linda Anthony, Colleen Bell, JoAnne Griffith, Linda Herring, and Sandy Toews presented a delightful recital of original compositions at the Forum on Saturday, Oct. 1. JoAnne played and narrated The Whales' Tale Down in the Sapphire Sea composed by her student, Jessica Weidner. Linda Anthony played You Are My God while JoAnne gave the narration for her composer/student, Nathaniel Weidner. These were followed by students from first through twelfth grades performing their own compositions. What a delightful event. There was a five minute intermission before the teachers, not daunted by Hurricane Rita, performed in The Teachers Perform for Students Recital. Performing were Andrea Cannon, Nancy Lawson and new member Darlene Manning. A great round of applause goes out to these three ladies. Colleen Bell adds her thanks for those participating and hopes we have even more performers next year. Now is the time to begin preparation for the 2006 Teachers Perform for Students Recital. Start thinking about the pieces you want to play.

World of Music: Please consider using the World of Music books in your teaching plans this year. They cover composers, their compositions and style characteristics of the four eras of music history. Discover how Aaron Copland didn’t start piano lessons until he was 11 years old, while Beethoven could already play most of the Preludes and Fugues from J.S. Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier by the age of 11. See your SA Handbook to order books and tests for each grade level. Please call me at 281-444-6670 if you have any questions.

Membership Directory: Please change out the directory pages in your Yearbook with the enclosed. I’ve reprinted them to accommodate the impressive number of new members who joined at the September meeting.

Furthermore. . . Don Harris tracked down honorary member Dee Schroell, and her address and phone number are in the directory. I talked to her on the phone, and even though a stroke dimmed her eyesight and slowed her walk, her speech is not affected, her mind is clear, and her interest in music remains intact. She very much wants to keep in touch with her friends here, so she’ll be getting the newsletter from now on. I also sent her a Yearbook….Dorothy Kirkpatrick had her purse stolen out of her locked car (they broke a window) in a church parking lot, and is still dealing with the results (credit cards, checks, important papers)….Colleen Bell tried to avoid Rita, but after spending 13 hours to go 40 miles on 59, turned around and came home. All’s well.
