GUEST: Lynn Pao

PROGRAM: Yamaha Music Education System

Lynn Pao holds a Master's Degree from Rice University, where she studied with Dr. Robert Roux, and a Bachelor's Degree from Baylor University, where she studied with Krassimira Jordan. She is an active teacher (both in her private studio and group Yamaha courses), composer, pianist, and adjudicator. Her students have been prize winners and award recipients in performing and composing. She has been Chair of the Houston MTA's Piano Contest, the Repertoire Committee, and the Teacher Development Fund Concert, and has been 1st Vice President of Programs.

Ms. Pao is a certified Yamaha Music Education Specialist and will introduce us to that system, in which students are taught singing, ear training, repertoire and ensemble playing, keyboard harmony, arranging music, technique and theory. She will give an overview of its core course, the Junior Music Course for 4 and 5 year olds, which is the foundation for study in Yamaha advanced courses. She promises that we will all get a chance to participate in some of the activities, so get ready to have some fun!

Yearbook Changes: John Hendrickson changed his e-mail address to: jdhendrickson@houston.rr.com
• Chairman of the Piano Contest is Colleen Bell. Please change on pages 9 and 22.
• The enclosed form "Don H. Harris Activity Awards" belongs with the description on page 33.

Piano Contest: This meeting is the deadline for entries in the March 31st CCMTA Piano Contest. Note that the chairman is Colleen Bell (not Wendy Wells as stated in the yearbook). Please remember to submit a master list form along with one entry form (with signatures) for each participant. No late entries will be accepted!

The schedule will be given out about two weeks before the event. Students could be scheduled to perform at any time during the day, and no time requests or adjustments to the schedule will be allowed. This means that we cannot work around other activities that students may have on the day of the contest. Be sure to inform your students’ parents of this scheduling procedure before they enter their children in the piano contest.

Late Student Affiliate Enrollments: For any late enrollments, print out the SA registration form on www.ccmta.org, fill out and mail to Wendy Wells with a check for $14 per student by February 20. This will be the last enrollment for the 2006-2007 year.

Don H. Harris Activity Awards: We hope that you have been keeping track of the activities of each of your students this year, as explained on page 33 of the yearbook. Unfortunately, the form to be submitted with that information was missing in the yearbook. We are enclosing that now, so that you will be ready for the April 15th deadline, which we will remind you of ahead of time.

Studio Spotlight: Colleen Bell will be hosting the meeting this month at her home on Friday, February 23rd from 10:00 AM to noon. A map was provided with the invitation to the Christmas party at her home (you do save the newsletters, don't you?). Please join us for a morning full of information and fun (and wear comfortable clothes…maybe some running shoes too!).

Free Piano Recital: An adult student of Linda Anthony will present an ambitious program of the music of Robert Schumann at The Woodlands Christian Church, 1202 N. Millbend Drive, The Woodlands, at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, February 13th. Everyone is welcome to attend "Lans Taylor Plays Robert Schumann."

Furthermore. . . Colleen Bell spent a wonderful week at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in January and ran a marathon while she was there. She said the best part was spending time with her sister and her husband. She bought them all silly hats, and it was quite an experience walking around the park wearing them. Lots of people made comments, and the kids were entertained. One baby was crying in his mother’s arms, but the minute she put him over her shoulder, he stopped crying and just stared at the silly hats behind. They were picked as "family of the day" at Epcot and got to ride before the park opened, got fastpasses that sent them to the front of some of the lines, and got VIP seating for the fireworks that night. She plans to return soon so that she can "remember how fun it is to be a kid!"
