CCMTA Scholarships: It is that time of year again. Time for the Memorial Summer Camp Scholarship deadline. Please see page 60 of the yearbook for all of the rules.

Typically, CCMTA has awarded around $300 per student to attend camp, or more, depending upon available funds. In past years, we have awarded as many as four scholarships, depending upon the number of applicants, and as mentioned above, available funds.

The deadline is the April meeting, April 15th. Please see attachment for suggested camps.

Also, the April meeting is the deadline for the CCMTA Scholarship, which goes to a graduating senior who plans to major or minor in a music field in college. See page 53 of the yearbook for details on this scholarship application. Best wishes on all applications for these scholarships!

Rebecca S. May, BM, ACM, NCTM
CCMTA Scholarship Chairman

Member of the Year: Our president, Dorothy Kirkpatrick, was unanimously voted at the April meeting to be the recipient of our Member of the Year Award, to be presented to her at the May Awards Ceremony on May 4th. She is most deserving of this honor—not just for this year’s presidency, but for the whole three years she has more than ably served in that capacity. Congratulations, Dorothy!

District Performance Competition: We recently received the following results from the March 15th District Piano Performance Competition held at Baylor University.

Only two winners in each division could be selected to advance to the state competitions which will be held in June at the TMTA Convention here in Houston. The winners from CCMTA selected to advance to state-level were:

Student Wins Four Special Medals: A student of Becky May, Romero Santiago, 11th grade student at Klein High School, has completed all four special medals from the Guild. With the 2007 auditions, he completed the last one, the Sonata Medal. He completed the Early Bach Medal in 2004, the Sonatina Medal in page 2 of 4 2005, the Advanced Bach Medal in 2006, and then the Sonata Medal in 2007. This is a very remarkable accomplishment. It means that he learned and memorized 15 pieces each year for 4 years, having learned and memorized each medal in one year's time! Romero will be a Senior at Klein High School in 2008-2009, and plans to perform his Senior Recital in September, 2008.

Furthermore. . . Long-time member Cindy Mackay has been ill for quite a while, and doctors haven’t been able to determine the cause. She is feeling a little better now, even though she is undergoing chemotherapy to treat stage four bone cancer The doctors don’t think, though, that her present illness is connected to that. I know we all wish her well...Marilyn Johnson’s mother passed away last month with her family at her side..Our condolences to Marilyn and her family….On a happier note, Becky May's son, Roy, Jr., is getting married in June. He is a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army, stationed in San Diego, CA as a recruiter. He formerly served as a sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington, D. C. The bride is Megan Wikary, from Chicago, Ill. They will be getting married here in Houston….We read in the Conroe MTA newsletter that Doris Lum Meyer has just earned her certification (NCTM). Congratulations!….Martha Hilley, NCTM from the University of Texas in Austin, one of the favorite presenters at TMTA conventions, received the Distinguished Service Award from MTNA. It was given to her at the MTNA Conference in Denver.

Application Procedures for the Harris Activity Awards

• The deadline for turning in entries for the Activity Awards is on or before April 15. Please mail all entries to: Don H. Harris, 3218 Forest Glen St., Spring, TX 77380. (Entries should not be left at The Music Rack!)

Please use the application form found on page 58 of the yearbook to list accumulated points earned from May l, 2007 to April 30, 2008. A separate form must be filled out for each individual student applying for the awards. (The application form may also be found on the CCMTA Website under “forms”.) Important: Grade level refers to the school grade at time awards are presented, even though points actually start accumulating from May of preceding school year.

We will be confirming points for all Student Affiliate events through the participation records of our SA chairmen, therefore, no extra documentation (copies of theory tests, critique sheets, etc.) will be required.

• We will, however, need documentation for the last three categories related to “non-SA performances” (Solo Recital, Studio Recital, and Other Performances). If no programs or other printed forms of documentation were available for a specific performance in this category, a brief note describing nature of the event and signature from the teacher will be considered acceptable. (When several entering students from the same class performed on the same program, turn in only one copy of the program with the appropriate names highlighted.)

Please read pages 57-58 in the yearbook thoroughly before sending in entries. The information contained on these pages should clarify all present specifics of the awards. However, if there should be any further questions, feel free to e-mail or call chairman Don Harris for assistance. ( donhharris@charter.net or (281) 367-4473) (Emails are preferred over calls when possible.)

Teachers of Cash Award Winners will be notified by phone and/or email shortly after winners are determined. In addition, a complete breakdown of winners will appear in the May newsletter.

Cash awards and honorable mention awards will be presented at the May Awards Ceremony (May 4) to teachers of winning students for convenient and flexible distribution within each individual class. (Any involved teachers of winning students who are unable to attend the May Awards Ceremony on May 4 should contact chairman to arrange delivery/pickup of awards.)
