Selecting a Music Teacher

Music education should be rewarding and life-enriching, beginning with the very first lesson. It is important to choose a professional music teacher who provides structured, individualized instruction. The relationship between teacher and student should reflect compatible goals and personalities and should promote encouragement and development of the musical potential of each student. These factors, as well as confidence in the abilities of the teacher, will help to ensure the highest possible return for the investment in lessons.

Here are some specific questions that you may want to ask during an interview with a prospective teacher:

1. What are your qualifications?
2. Do you have a studio policy?
3. What is your policy with regard to fees, cancellations, and make-up lessons?
4. What other policies should I know about?
5. What age groups do you teach?
6. What instructional material do you use?
7. Do you teach a variety of musical styles?
8. What strategies do you use to motivate students?
9. Do you regularly evaluate students' performance?
10. Do you provide performance opportunities for students?
11. Do you enter students in festivals and competitions? Are they required?
12. Do you include group lessons?
13. How much practice time do you require each day?
14. How can I (as a parent) insure my child's progress in music?
