CCMTA  Piano Contest

Purpose: To provide a challenging and stimulating experience for interested students. Selected winners perform in a Winners’ Recital.

Format: Students will play required selection(s) from memory for a panel of judges. There will be no audience. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of each grade level. Teachers are responsible for picking up trophies left after the winners recital.

Repertoire: Students will play the required selection(s) listed for his/her grade level on the following pages. Memorization is required.

1. The number of pieces for each grade shall be two pieces for grades 1-5 with no alternate pieces on the repertoire list, and one piece each for grades 6-12, with no alternate pieces on the repertoire list.
2. The repertoire for grades 9-12 shall be less difficult and shorter than the 2003 contest, and the Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature by Jane Magrath shall be used as a guide, with the final decision being made by the committee.
3. The repertoire committee needs to meet together in order to share ideas and also to share responsibility.
4. The contest chairman and committee members cannot serve on the repertoire committee.
5. One classical piece and one teaching piece is required for grades 1-5. One classical piece is required for grades 6-12.
6. Give consideration to the playability of each piece on the list due to hand size.


Fee: $20 (non-refundable)

Application: Each teacher should submit a master list of their student participants. In addition, one entry form must be filled out (with signatures) for each student entered in the contest. No late entries will be accepted, so plan ahead!

Eligibility: Student must have studied with teacher submitting application for a minimum of 6 months. If the requirement cannot be met, and if the previous teacher is a member of CCMTA, the application will be accepted with the notation of length of time studied with each teacher.

Requirements: Students in grades 1 - 12. Pupil may enter higher grade level, but not a lower one. If a higher grade level is selected, it must not be more than two years above the student’s school grade. SA membership through CCMTA is required, however, the state theory test is not. Any edition is acceptable. Student will furnish the judge original scores. NO XEROX!! Any student who plays the wrong piece will automatically be disqualified. Therefore, take extreme care to prepare the appropriate pieces.

Rules: Any changes in instrument, room setup, temperature, or any other procedure after the contest has begun is at the sole request and discretion of the judges. Any contestant, teacher or guest of a contestant questioning the judges’ authority will be subject to being disqualified at the discretion of the Contest Chairman, or acting chairman. Any protests may be made in writing to the Member-at-Large and submitted by the teacher. In the event of questions regarding the contest, the teacher may contact the chairman. For no reason whatsoever is the contest chairman to be contacted by any contestant or parent or guardian.

Winners' Recital: First and second place winners in grades 1-5 and first place winners in grades 6-12 are expected to perform in the Winner’s Recital on the evening of April 12th. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners will receive trophies in an awards ceremony following the recital.
