The Don H. Harris Activity Awards
Funded by the Pat Wickey Endowment Fund

Pat Wickey was CCMTA’s first president from 1979-1980, and in this capacity she very willingly assisted greatly in helping our beginning small membership get off the ground. She has remained a prime supporter of our fine organization ever since – both personally and financially – and through the years has become well established as one of CCMTA’s primary and permanent cornerstones. CCMTA proudly applauds her lasting and sincere devotion!

Don Harris also became an active member during our Association’s early development, and has remained one of our more enthusiastic workers ever since. In addition to being President for four terms, he has annually composed noteworthy compositions that have been performed and very favorably received in the TMTA Convention Ensemble Programs. It was Pat Wickey’s request that these awards be in his honor.

The Don H. Harris Activity Awards have been established to encourage students to participate in CCMTA activities with a special concentration on composition. Funding for the awards has been made possible through the generosity of Pat Wickey. The awards will be administered by the Activity Awards committee.

Students will accumulate points during the year from May 1-April 30. Teachers must verify points and submit entries on or before the deadline. A minimum of 14 points for grades 1-8, and 17 points for grades 9-12 are required to submit an entry. In the event of a tie, the student who entered the composition contest would win. If more than one entered, the committee would first consider the composition score and second the theory score. If none of the tied students were in the composition contest, first the theory score would be considered, and second the committee would meet and make the final decision. The decision of the Activity Awards committee will be final and no duplicate prizes will be awarded unless there are leftover funds from other grade levels for that year that had no winners—in which case any additional awards would be made at the committee’s discretion. Awards may be given at a special awards ceremony in late April or early May (date to be set by committee); or mailed to teachers of winning students or presented to teachers of winning students at May Luncheon—decision to be made annually at the committee’s discretion. These are not cumulative awards and points may not be carried over into the next year.

The winners’ awards will consist of the following cash awards plus special ribbon or medal:

1st grade $25

4th grade $25

7th grade $25

10th grade $50

2nd grade $25

5th grade $25

8th grade $50

11th grade $75

3rd grade $25

6th grade $25

9th grade $50

12th grade $75

In addition, all other participants who meet the minimal points for entry will receive special honorable mention certificates, ribbons or medals. The type awards given any specific year will be based on funds available, and left to committee’s discretion.

Grade levels refer to the school grade when the awards are presented. For example, students who were in the 5th grade in May of 2006, may accumulate points for the 6th grade award, since they will be in the 6th grade when the awards will be presented. Teachers are solely responsible for keeping track of points earned by their students.

Students must be studying with a CCMTA teacher and all of the performances must be on that primary instrument. The committee reserves the right to decide if an event is acceptable.
